Refurbishment by Component
Long-term PET preform production places continuous load on cavities, cores, neck rings, gate areas, cooling channels, guide components, and other precision interfaces. Instead of treating the entire mold as a single replacement unit, SZ-MOLDTECH evaluates the condition of individual components and determines whether they should be cleaned, reworked, refurbished, or replaced.

IMAGE PLACEHOLDER · CavityCavity Refurbishment - Restore the Molding Surface
Cavities are exposed to repeated thermal cycling, resin contact, cleaning, and mechanical loading during high-volume production. Surface wear, deposits, scratches, or damage can gradually affect preform appearance and dimensional consistency. SZ-MOLDTECH inspects cavity surfaces and critical mating areas before determining whether polishing, machining, surface restoration, or cavity replacement is appropriate.
-
IMAGE PLACEHOLDER · CoreCore Refurbishment - Recover Core Accuracy and Mating Condition
Core components directly influence the internal geometry and wall formation of the PET preform. Wear around molding and sealing surfaces can lead to dimensional variation or inconsistent component fit. The refurbishment process focuses on the core's dimensional condition, surface quality, sealing areas, and relationship with the cavity and neck-forming components.

IMAGE PLACEHOLDER · Neck & Lock RingNeck Ring & Lock Ring Refurbishment - Restore Neck-Forming Precision
Neck rings and lock rings are critical to the formation and positioning of the preform neck finish. Wear at the contact and parting areas may contribute to flash, dimensional deviation, or unstable mold closing conditions. SZ-MOLDTECH checks the relevant mating surfaces and preload condition before deciding whether rework, adjustment, or component replacement is required.
-
IMAGE PLACEHOLDER · Gate InsertGate Insert Refurbishment - Improve Gate Area Condition
The gate area directly affects the appearance and consistency of the preform base. Repeated production can cause wear, deposits, or dimensional changes around the gate insert. The gate insert is inspected for surface condition, dimensional wear, and fit with the surrounding components. Depending on the inspection result, it can be cleaned, reworked, or replaced.
-
IMAGE PLACEHOLDER · Cooling ChannelCooling System Refurbishment - Restore Cooling Flow Through the Mold
Cooling performance is essential for maintaining consistent cycle conditions across multiple cavities. Deposits, corrosion, or restricted passages can reduce cooling efficiency and create temperature differences between cavities. SZ-MOLDTECH checks the condition of cooling passages and related interfaces and can carry out cleaning or component-level refurbishment where required.
-
IMAGE PLACEHOLDER · Wear ComponentsMold Plate & Wear Component Refurbishment - Restore Mechanical Movement and Alignment
Long-term mold operation can gradually wear guide surfaces, wear plates, stripper plate interfaces, and other moving components. The refurbishment process identifies excessive clearance, surface wear, and damaged mechanical interfaces. Worn components can be reworked or replaced to restore the required movement and fit between mold components.
Recondition the Components That Directly Form the Preform
A cold half refurbishment does not necessarily require replacement of the complete mold assembly. Depending on the mold condition, SZ-MOLDTECH can assess and refurbish the following components. The final refurbishment scope is determined after inspection and dimensional evaluation.
This component-based approach is consistent with established PET mold refurbishment practices, where cold-half programs can range from neck-ring rework to broader restoration involving cavities, lock rings, mold shoes, wear plates, and related components.
Restore Melt Delivery Components for Stable Injection
Hot runner condition directly affects melt delivery, gate performance, temperature control, and cavity-to-cavity consistency. The refurbishment scope is based on actual component condition rather than automatic replacement of the complete system.
- Nozzle components
- Nozzle tips
- Heaters
- Thermocouples
- Manifold-related components
- Melt flow passages
- Sealing surfaces
- Mechanical interfaces
SZ-MOLDTECH can inspect key hot runner components and identify parts requiring cleaning, rework, adjustment, or replacement. Husky similarly structures hot runner refurbishment around disassembly, cleaning, component inspection, rework, testing, and replacement where required, with the objective of restoring system performance and extending service life.
PET Preform Mold Refurbishment Process
The process follows the same basic principle used by major tooling suppliers: inspect the system, identify the actual wear, carry out targeted rework or replacement, then verify the refurbished assembly.
Mold Condition Assessment
We first review the mold configuration, cavity count, preform specification, production history, machine interface, and reported production issues. This establishes the technical background before the mold is disassembled.
Component Inspection
The mold is inspected component by component for wear, contamination, dimensional deviation, surface damage, mechanical clearance, and cooling condition.
Refurbishment Scope Definition
Components are classified according to their actual condition: Reuse - suitable for continued service. Rework - suitable for restoration through machining, polishing, cleaning, or adjustment. Replace - beyond a practical refurbishment condition.
Precision Reconditioning
The required components are cleaned, machined, polished, repaired, adjusted, or replaced according to the approved refurbishment scope.
Reassembly & Dimensional Verification
Refurbished components are reassembled and checked for critical interfaces, alignment, movement, fit, and dimensional relationships.
Trial & Final Inspection
Where required, the refurbished mold can be trialed and the resulting preforms inspected before final delivery.
See Which Components Have Been Restored
Visual comparison is useful for showing the actual scope of refurbishment. Instead of using one general "old vs. new mold" image, SZ-MOLDTECH recommends documenting individual components before and after refurbishment. Drag the handle to compare.

Choose the Scope According to Actual Wear
Not every PET preform mold requires a complete rebuild. The appropriate refurbishment level depends on the number of worn components, production requirements, mold history, and overall tooling condition.
Component-Level Refurbishment
Suitable when wear is concentrated in selected components such as neck rings, gate inserts, wear plates, or guide components.
Partial Mold Refurbishment
Suitable when multiple components require restoration while the main mold structure remains serviceable.
Comprehensive Mold Refurbishment
Suitable for heavily used tooling requiring broader inspection, component replacement, mechanical restoration, cooling service, and hot runner refurbishment.
Why Refurbish an Existing PET Preform Mold?
Major PET tooling suppliers also position refurbishment as a lifecycle solution for extending mold or hot runner service life, improving uptime and maintaining production performance.
Extend Mold Service Life
Restore serviceable tooling components and continue using the existing mold instead of replacing the complete system prematurely.
Recover Dimensional Consistency
Address wear in cavities, cores, neck rings, gate components, and mechanical interfaces that may affect preform dimensions.
Reduce Unnecessary Replacement
Retain components that remain within acceptable condition and focus refurbishment work on parts that require attention.
Improve Production Stability
Correct component wear, contamination, cooling restrictions, and mechanical clearance that can contribute to unstable molding conditions.
Support Legacy Tooling
Existing PET preform molds can be evaluated for refurbishment even when they have been in production for many years. Final compatibility and refurbishment feasibility depend on the actual mold configuration and condition.
144-Cavity PET Preform Mold Refurbishment
SZ-MOLDTECH can evaluate high-cavity PET preform molds that have accumulated substantial production cycles and require component-level restoration. For a 144-cavity PET preform mold, the refurbishment assessment focuses on the condition of critical molding and mechanical components rather than treating the entire mold as a single replacement item.
PET Preform Mold Refurbishment vs. New Mold
The correct solution should be determined from the mold's technical condition, production requirements, and required preform specification.
